This crochet flower dishcloth pattern has a little bit of texture, making it great for washing dishes. You could also use this flower dishcloth as a facecloth or as a pan or pot holder!

This dishcloth is a great “fast-make” project and also a wonderful “yarn-busting” pattern for scrap yarn as each flower uses only 45 yds of yarn in total.

Pattern Details

Skill Level

Intermediate (the pattern includes front post double crochet stitches, making it just above the “easy” category. But it includes lots of pictures and step by step instructions to help you follow along)

Size

The pattern creates a round dishcloth that has a diameter of approx. 7.5” (measured from petal to petal)

Gauge

After Round 4 following the pattern, work should measure 4”. Gauge is only important if you want the dishcloth to be the same size referenced above.

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 45 yds of any size 4 (medium) 100% cotton yarn (5 yds for the center of the flower and 40 yds for the petals). I used Bernat Handicrafter Cotton Yarn. The colors used in the photos are “Jute” (beige), “Blueberry” (blue), “Teal” (green) and “Tangerine” (orange). 

Crochet Hook: H/8 (5.00mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge. 

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors. 

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

ch = chain
st = stitch
sts = stitches 
sl st = slip stitch 
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet 
dc = double crochet
tr = triple crochet 
YO = yarn over
fpdc = front post double crochet 
sk = skip 

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet Stitch (fpdc): YO, insert your hook from the front around the stem of the st in the row below from right to left, then complete dc st in the usual way. 

Triple/Treble Crochet Stitch (tr): YO twice, insert hook into next st. YO and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). YO, pull yarn through last 2 loops on hook. 

Changing Colors

Change colors after finishing Round 2 by placing the new color on your hook and pulling the new color through the loop of your current color. Fasten off the old color. With your new color, ch 1 and begin the next round. 

Pattern Notes

• The pattern is worked from the center out. It is worked in the round. Do not turn after any round. 
• Always work into the 1st st (the st attached to the chain), unless instructed not to.
• Ch 1 always counts as a st. 
• Starting on Round 4 and until the end, you will be making a fpdc st followed by an hdc in the same st (which is the st behind the now completed fpdc). After making an fpdc, the st you will be working your hdc into becomes quite hidden. Tip: push the completed fpdc towards you to work more easily into the same st (which is the st behind the completed fpdc).

Pattern Instructions

Start: Make a Magic Ring/Circle.

Round 1: 10 hdc into Magic Ring (10 hdc). Pull end of magic ring tight to close. Sl st into top of 1st hdc to join.(reminder: never turn). 

Round 2: Ch 1. 2 hdc into each st around. (21 sts. Reminder: ch 1 always counts as a st). Sl st into top of 1st hdc to join. Change colors. 

Round 3: Ch 1. 1 hdc in next 2 sts. *2 hdc in next st. Hdc in next st.* Repeat from * to * around. (30 sts). Sl st into top of 1st hdc to join. 

Round 4: Ch 1. (Image above illustrates st locations). Sk 1st st. *Fpdc around hdc from round below. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * around until 2 sts left. Fpdc around hdc from round below (Round 3). Hdc in same st. Hdc in last st. From now on, the last st will always be the st attached to ch. (40 sts). Sl st into 1st st to join.

Measurements (optional): If size / gauge is important to you, work after Round 4 should measure 4”. 

Round 5: Ch 1. Sk 1st st. *Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around until 3 sts left. Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 2 sts. (50 sts). Sl st into 1st st to join.

Round 6: Ch 1. Sk 1st st. *Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 4 sts.* Repeat from * to * around until 4 sts left. Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 3 sts. (60 sts). Sl st into 1st st to join.

Round 7: Ch 1. Sk 1st st. *Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. In next st, dc. In next st, 3 tr in same st. In next st, 3 tr in same st. In next st, dc. In next st, hdc.* Repeat from * to * around until 5 sts left. Fpdc around fpdc from round below. Hdc in same st. In next st, dc. In next st, 3 tr in same st. In next st, 3 tr in same st. In next st, dc. (110 sts / 10 petals made in total). Sl st into 1st st to join. 

Fasten off and weave in loose ends. 

And now you have a new flower dishcloth!
