Pattern Notes

  • When the pattern has instructions in round brackets, it means to crochet those instructions in the same space. For example, “In the next ch-1 sp, (dc, ch 1, dc)” means to: make 1 dc, ch 1 and 1 dc, all in the same chain one space.

How to Crochet the Snowflake Coasters

Snowflake Coaster Pattern Instructions

Start: With Color A (the snowflake color), make a Magic Circle. Continue using Color A until instructed to change colors.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 3.

[In the magic circle, hdc. Ch 1.] x 7 (meaning to complete the instructions in brackets a total of 7 times).

Pull the magic circle tight to close.

Sl st into the ch-3 sp (the sp between the starting ch-3 and the first hdc) to join.

(Stitch count: 7 hdc sts, 1 ch-3 sp and 7 ch-1 sps (the 7 ch-1 sps are the sps under each ch-1)).

Round 1

Round 2 (RS):Ch 3. Do not turn.

In the ch-3 sp, dc.

*In the next ch-1 sp, (dc, ch 1, dc).*

Repeat from * to * around.

Sl st into the ch-3 sp (the sp between the starting ch-3 and the first dc) to join.

(Stitch count: 15 dc sts, 1 ch-3 sp and 7 ch-1 sps).

Round 2

Round 3 (RS): Ch 2. Do not turn.

In the ch-3 sp, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc).

*In the next ch-1 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc).*

Repeat from * to * around.

Sl st in the top of the first dc to join.

(Stitch count: 31 dc sts and 8 ch-2 sps (the ch-2 sps are the sps under each ch-2. The starting ch-2 does not create a ch-2 sp)).

Round 3

Round 4 (RS): Do not turn.

Sl st into the first ch-2 sp.

Ch 2.

In the same/first ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).

*In the next ch-2 sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc).*

Repeat from * to * around.

Sl st in the top of the first dc to join.

(Stitch count: 47 dc sts and 8 ch-2 sps. The starting ch-2 does not create a ch-2 sp).

Fasten off Color A (cut the yarn that is attached to the skein and pull it through the loop that was on your hook).

Round 4

For Round 5, when the instructions say to work in the sp between sts, it means to insert your hook in between the posts of the next 2 sts (do not work in the tops of sts). Treat the starting ch-2 from the previous round as a dc st.

Round 5 (RS): Do not turn.

Insert your hook into the first ch-2 sp. Place Color B (the background color) on your hook and pull it through the sp.

With Color B, ch 1.

*In the ch-2 sp, make 2 sc.

In the sp between the next 2 sts, hdc.

In the sp between the next 2 sts, dc.

In the sp between clusters (the groups of 3 dc sts), tr.

In the sp between the next 2 sts, dc.

In the sp between the next 2 sts, hdc.*

Repeat from * to * around.

(Stitch count: 56 sts (not counting the ch-1 made at the start)).

Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.

Round 5
Round 5 Complete

Round 6 (WS): Still with Color B, ch 1 and turn (the wrong side/back of your coaster will be facing you).

Sk the first st (the st attached to the ch. This is the sl st from the previous round and never gets worked into).

Note: in this round, make your sts loosely.

*In the next st, hdc. In the next st, sl st.*

Repeat from * to * around.

(Stitch count: 28 hdc sts and 28 sl sts = 56 sts).

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

Round 6

Fasten off and weave in your loose ends.

How to Crochet the Snowflake Coaster Holder

Snowflake Coaster Holder Crochet Pattern

Holder Details

Size/Gauge: The snowflake coaster holder is approx. 6.5” across and 2” high. After Round 2, work should measure 2.5” across.

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need approx. 90 yds in total for the holder. I used Impeccable in “Pale Gray.”

Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).

Holder Pattern Instructions

Holder Start – Round 4: Complete the instructions for the Snowflake Coaster from the start to the end of Round 4. Fasten off.

Holder Round 5 (RS): Attach yarn (the same color you have been using) to the first ch-2 sp. Ch 1. Follow the instructions for the Snowflake Coaster Round 5 from * to * around. (Stitch count: 56 sts – not counting the ch-1 at the start). Sl st in the top of the first sc to join.

Holder Round 5

Holder Round 6 (RS): Ch 2. Do not turn.

In the first st, 2 dc.

In the next st, dc.

*In the next st, 2 dc. In the next st, dc.*

Repeat from * to * around.

(Stitch count: 84 dc sts).

Sl st into the first dc to join.

Do not fasten off.

After Round 6, the holder should measure 6.5” across. Place a snowflake coaster over your holder bottom to ensure that the coasters will fit in the holder. The holder bottom should be larger than the coaster. If the holder bottom is too small or too big, start again with a larger hook or smaller hook.
