Men’s Crochet Scarf

This crochet scarf for men is a very easy pattern. It is made from two simple stitches. If you know how to slip stitch and you know how to make half double crochet stitches, you can easily make this men’s scarf crochet pattern!

When alternating rows of these stitches, it creates a gorgeous scarf for men that is masculine and fashionable. Plus it’s reversible. The front and the sides back look slightly different but both looks great.

The size of the scarf is 6″ wide and 68″ long, which is the average size of a men’s scarf but you can easily customize the size.

You can use any worsted weight, size 4 (medium) yarn to make this crochet scarf. It makes a wonderful gift that will be used and loved by any man in your life!

The pattern creates a scarf that is approx. 6” wide and 68” long (without the tassels).

Terminology

This men’s crochet scarf pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology.

Gauge

4” x 4” = 13 sts and 14 rows (following the pattern – you can count either hdc or sl sts. Count both hdc and sl st rows) 

Materials

Yarn: Approx. 415 yds / 380 m of any size 4 (medium) worsted weight yarn. I used 1.5 skeins of Loops & Threads Impeccable Yarn, Solid in the color Blue Moon. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic (4.5 oz / 127.5 g and 285 yds / 260 m).

Crochet Hooks: I/9 (5.50 mm) and K/10.5 (6.50 mm).

Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape. Optional: a 6” object (piece of thick cardboard or a notebook) to help cut strands for the tassels. 

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches 
• sl st = slip stitch 
• hdc = half double crochet
• RS = right side / front 
• WS = wrong side / back 

How to Adjust the Size

The scarf is worked from the long side up meaning your chain row will determine the scarf’s length. To adjust the length, make less or more starting chains and add 3 (any number + 3). To adjust the width, make less or more rows.

Pattern Notes

• Always work in the 1st stitch (the stitch attached to the chain). 
• Chains never count as stitches. 
• The pattern is worked by repeating a row of hdc stitches and a row of slip stitches. Make your slip stitches VERY loosely otherwise they can be too tight to work into.

How to Crochet the Men’s Scarf (Pattern Instructions)

Scarf Instructions

Start: With I/9 (5.50 mm) hook, chain 223. 

For Row 1 (only), work into the back ridge loops. 

Row 1 (RS): Use I/9 hook for entire row. In the third ch from hook, hdc. In each ch across, hdc. (221 sts – reminder: chains never count as sts).

Row 2 (WS): Switch to K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook and use this size for entire row. Ch 1 and turn. Sl st VERY loosely into the back loop only (the loop furthest away from you) of each st across. (221 sts)

Row 3 (RS): Switch to I/9 hook and use this size for entire row. Ch 1 and turn. Hdc (normally into the top two loops of the slip stitches from the previous row) in each st across. (221 sts). 

Row 4 and on: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 consecutively until your work measures approx. 6” high (approx. 19 rows) or your desired height (height = width of scarf). End after completing a Row 3. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. 

Adding Fringe / Tassels

You will attach tassels to the left and right sides with the RS of the scarf facing up. Place one tassel in the middle of each hdc row.

You will need approx. 80 x 12” strands of yarn for the tassels (for tassels that are approx. 5” long). To make the tassels shorter or longer, cut smaller or bigger strands. 

Tip for cutting the the strands: find an object that is 6” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 6” object 80 times (or 2 x 40 times so the strands are easier to cut). Cut the yarn in half. 

Attaching the Tassels

A) Take four strands of yarn, fold them in half and with your hook, pull the folded ends through the stitch (which creates a loop).

B) Pull the ends through the loop. 

C) Pull tight to make a knot. 

Repeat for each tassel.
