Easy Crochet Pumpkins
These easy crochet pumpkins are wonderful fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations. The step-by-step pattern with diagrams and a full video tutorial will show you how to crochet a pumpkin from start to finish.
The pattern includes instructions for three sizes of pumpkins as well as how to assemble the pumpkins and directions for making the stem and pumpkin leaves.

The pattern includes instructions for three sizes. The finished pumpkin is approx. (not including the stem or leaves):
- Small: 3” high and 13” around
- Medium: 4.5” high and 20” around
- Large: 6.5” high and 26” around
Materials
Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn in three colors. You will need approx.:
Orange yarn for the pumpkin:
- Small: 55 yds
- Medium: 100 yds
- Large: 175 yds
Brown yarn for the stem (all sizes): 3 yds
Green yarn for the leaves (all sizes): 8 yds
I used Impeccable yarn by Loops & Threads in the colors: “Pumpkin,” for the pumpkin, “Soft Taupe” for the stem and “Forest” for the leaves. This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.
Crochet Hook Size: G/7 (4.50 mm).
Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors, a measuring tape, and polyester stuffing.
Terminology
This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = triple/treble crochet
- BLO = back loops only
- RS = right side (front)
- WS = wrong side (back)
- Med = medium
- Lg = large
Gauge
Exact sizing is not important. For reference, after Row 4 of the Pumpkin Body, my work measured:
- Small: 4.5” wide
- Med: 7” wide
- Lg: 9.5” wide
Pattern Notes
- Chains never count as stitches.
- The pattern indicates when to work into the top loop of chain stitches. The image below shows where the top loops are:

How to Crochet the Easy Pumpkins
Small Pumpkin Body Instructions
Start – Small: With orange yarn, leave a 24” starting tail and ch 18.
For Row 1 (only) work into the top loop of the chs.
Row 1 – Small (RS):
In the second ch from hook, sc.
Sc in the next ch.
Hdc in the next 3 chs.
Dc in the next 7 chs.
Hdc in the next 3 chs.
Sc in the next 2 chs.
(17 sts).
For the rest of the pumpkin body, always work into the back loops only (BLO), which are the loops furthest away from you.
Row 2 – Small (WS):
Ch 1 and turn.
In the BLO of the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Sc in the BLO of the next st.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 3 sts.
Dc in the BLO of the next 7 sts.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 3 sts.
Sc in the BLO of the next 2 sts.
(17 sts).
Rows 3 to 24 – Small: Repeat Row 2.
After Row 24, fasten off leaving a 24” ending tail. Proceed to the “Pumpkin Assembly” instructions.
Medium Pumpkin Body Instructions
Start – Med: With orange yarn, leave a 24” starting tail and ch 28.
For Row 1 (only) work into the top loop of the chs.
Row 1 – Med (RS):
In the second ch from hook, sc.
Sc in the next 3 chs.
Hdc in the next 5 chs.
Dc in the next 9 chs.
Hdc in the next 5 chs.
Sc in the next 4 chs.
(27 sts).
For the rest of the pumpkin body, always work into the back loops only (BLO), which are the loops furthest away from you.
Row 2 – Med (WS):
Ch 1 and turn.
In the BLO of the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Sc in the BLO of the next 3 sts.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 5 sts.
Dc in the BLO of the next 9 sts.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 5 sts.
Sc in the BLO of the next 4 sts.
(27 sts).
Rows 3 to 36 – Med: Repeat Row 2.
After Row 36, fasten off leaving a 36” ending tail. Proceed to the “Pumpkin Assembly” instructions.
Large Pumpkin Body Instructions
Start – Lg: With orange yarn, leave a 36” starting tail and ch 38.
For Row 1 (only) work into the top loop of the chs.
Row 1 – Lg (RS):
In the second ch from hook, sc.
Sc in the next 5 chs.
Hdc in the next 7 chs.
Dc in the next 11 chs.
Hdc in the next 7 chs.
Sc in the next 6 chs.
(37 sts).
For the rest of the pumpkin body, always work into the back loops only (BLO), which are the loops furthest away from you.
Row 2 – Lg (WS):
Ch 1 and turn.
In the BLO of the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Sc in the BLO of the next 5 sts.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 7 sts.
Dc in the BLO of the next 11 sts.
Hdc in the BLO of the next 7 sts.
Sc in the BLO of the next 6 sts.
(37 sts).
Rows 3 to 48 – Lg: Repeat Row 2.
After Row 48, fasten off leaving a 48” ending tail. Proceed to the “Pumpkin Assembly” instructions.
Pumpkin Assembly (All Sizes)
Assembly Start: Ensure that the RS (front) is on the outside.
How to tell which is the RS: with your work facing you, the starting tail should be on the bottom left and the ending tail should by the on the top right.
Step 1 – Close the Bottom
Use the ending tail to sew the bottom closed:
- Starting in the chain/first row, with your yarn needle (always working into the spaces or under 1 loop at the end of the row), weave the ending tail in the end of the row.
B) Weave the yarn out of the end of the next row.
C) Repeat weaving in the end of the next row and out the end of the following row all the way around.
After weaving all the way around, pull the ending tail tight to close (for the medium and large sizes, you may need to pull VERY tightly and sew to close completely).
Once closed, sew across the bottom in all directions many times to keep the bottom securely closed (ensure your sewing lines are inside your work so the yarn that crosses over the bottom is not shown on the outside).
Step 2 – Sew Sides Together
Once the bottom is securely closed, position your work so the chain/first row is on your right and the last row is on your left.
A) Weave your needle along the inside of your work and pull the yarn out (from in to out) through both loops of the first ch.
B) Still working into the chain/first row, from out to in, pull the yarn through both loops of the next (second) ch.
C) Working into the last row, from in to out, pull the yarn through the outer loop of the first st from the last row. (The outer loop is the loop on the left).
D) Still working into the last row, from out to in, pull the yarn through the outer loop of the next (second) st from the last row.
Note: the “next” ch or st means to work in the next unworked ch or st.
E) *Working into the chain/first row, from in to out, pull the yarn through both loops of the next ch.
Still working into the chain/first row, from out to in, pull the yarn through both loops of the next ch.
Working into the last row, from in to out, pull the yarn through the outer loop of the next st.
Still working into the last row, from out to in, pull the yarn through the outer loop of the next st.*
Repeat from * to * all the way up.
F) After working all the way up, weave in the ending tail.
Step 3 – Fill with Stuffing
Break the stuffing into small pieces and fill the inside of the pumpkin, being careful not to overstuff (the goal is to shape your pumpkin but the stitches shouldn’t be stretched).
Step 4 – Close the Top
With the starting tail, follow the same (and entire) instructions for “Assembly Step 1: Close the bottom.” Once the top is closed, weave in the starting tail.
Pumpkin Stem (All Sizes)
Stem Start (All Sizes): With brown yarn, make a Magic Circle.
Stem Round 1 (All Sizes): Ch 1.
Make 10 hdc into the Magic Circle.
Pull the Magic Circle tight to close.
Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.
(10 hdc sts).
Stem Round 2 (All Sizes): Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the BLO of the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Sc in the BLO of each st around.
Sl st into both loops of the first sc to join.
(Work in both loops from now on).
(10 sc sts).
Weave in the starting tail.
Stem Round 3 (All Sizes): Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the first st (the st attached to the ch), sc.
Sc in each st around.
Sl st into the top of the first sc to join.
(10 sc sts).
Stem Round 4 (All Sizes): Repeat Stem Round 3.
For the Small size, proceed to the Leaves instructions.
Stem Round 5 (Med & Lg): Repeat Stem Round 3.
For the Med, size proceed to the Leaves instructions.
Stem Round 6 (Lg): Repeat Stem Round 3.
Proceed to the Leaves instructions.
Pumpkin Leaves (All Sizes)
Attach green yarn by placing it on your hook and pulling it through the loop of brown yarn that is currently on your hook. Fasten off the brown yarn.
For Round 1 (only), when working into ch sts, work into the top loop only.
Leaves Round 1:
You will start making 3 leaves in this round: Leaf A, B & C. The instructions for Leaf A has different instructions for the small size and medium/large size.
If you made the small pumpkin, follow the instructions for “Leaf A (Small).”
If you made the medium or large pumpkin, follow the instructions for “Leaf A (Med/Lg).”
Leaf A (Small): Ch 4.
In the second ch from the hook, sc.
Sc in the next 2 chs. (3 sc sts made across the ch-4).
Sl st into the next st on the Stem (not the first st/the st attached to the ch-4).
Proceed to the instructions for “Leaves Round 1 – Leaf B (All Sizes).”
Leaf A (Med/Lg): Ch 11.
In the second ch from the hook, sc.
Sc in the next 9 chs. (10 sc sts made across the ch-11).
Sl st into next st on the Stem (not the first st/the st attached to the ch-11).
Proceed to the instructions for “Leaves Round 1 – Leaf B (All Sizes).”
The rest of the instructions for Leaves Round 1 are the same for all sizes:
Leaf B (All Sizes):
Sl st into next 3 sts on the Stem.
Ch 6. In the second ch from the hook, sc.
Sc in next 4 chs. (5 sc sts made across the ch-6).
Sl st into next st on the Stem (not the st attached to the ch-6).
Sl st into next 2 sts on the Stem.
Leaf C (All Sizes):
Ch 8. In the second ch from the hook, sc.
Sc in the next 6 chs. (7 sc sts made across the ch-8).
Sl st into next st on the Stem (not the st attached to the ch-8).
Sl st into the last st on the Stem.
Sl st into the first ch to join (for the small size, this is the first ch of the ch-4 that started Leaf A (Small). For the med/lg size, this is the first ch of the ch-11 that started Leaf A (Med/Lg)).
Leaves Round 2:
You will finish making 3 leaves in this round: Leaf A, B & C. The instructions for Leaf A has different instructions for the small size and medium/large size.
If you made the small pumpkin, follow the instructions for “Leaf A (Small).”
If you made the medium or large pumpkin, follow the instructions for “Leaf A (Med/Lg).”
Leaf A (Small): Ch 1. Do not turn.
In the first ch (the same ch that you made a sl st into to join the previous round), hdc.
(Work up, into each ch).
Sc in the next ch.
Sl st in the next ch.
Ch 1. (Work down the other side, into each sc).
Sl st in the next st.
Sc in the next st.
Hdc in the next st.
Ch 1. Sl st into same st.
Sl st into next 3 sts (the slip stitches from the previous round).
Proceed to the instructions for “Leaves Round 2 – Leaf B (All Sizes).”
Leaf A (Med/Lg): Ch 3. (Do not turn).
In the first ch (the same ch that you made a sl st into to join the previous round), tr.
(Work up, into each ch).
Tr in the next ch.
Dc in next 2 chs.
Hdc in next 2 chs.
Sc in next 2 chs.
Sl st in next 2 chs.
Ch 1.
(Work down the other side, into each sc).
Sl st in next 2 sts.
Sc in next 2 sts.
Hdc in next 2 sts.
Dc in next 2 sts.
Tr in next 2 sts.
Ch 3.
Sl st into same st.
Sl st into next 3 sts (the slip stitches from the previous round).
Proceed to the instructions for “Leaves Round 2 – Leaf B (All Sizes).”
The rest of the instructions for Leaves Round 2 are the same for all sizes:
Leaf B (All Sizes):
Sl st into the first ch (the first of the ch-6 from the previous round).
Ch 3.
Tr in same ch.
(Work up, into each ch).
Dc in next ch.
Hdc in next ch.
Sc in next ch.
Sl st in next ch.
Ch 1.
(Work down the other side, into each sc).
Sl st in next st.
Sc in next st.

Ch 3.
Sl st into same st.
Round 2 Leaf C – All Sizes:
Sl st into next 2 sts (the slip stitches from the previous round).
Sl st into the first ch (the first of the ch-8 made from previous round).
Ch 3.
Tr in same ch.
(Work up, into each ch).
Dc in next 2 chs.
Hdc in next ch.
Sc in next 2 chs.
Sl st in next ch.
Ch 1.
(Work down the other side, into each sc).
Sl st in next st.
Sc in next 2 sts.
Hdc in next st.
Dc in next 2 sts.
Tr in next st.
Ch 3.
Sl st into same st.
Sl st into next st (the slip stitch from the previous round).
Fasten off leaving a 24” ending tail.
Weave in all other ends except for the 24” ending tail.
Fill the stem with stuffing.
With a yarn needle and the 24” ending tail from the leaves, attach the stem and leaves to the top center of the pumpkin. Sew in and out of the sl sts from Leaves Round 2 and in and out of the base of the leaves.
Weave in the ending tail.
And now you have a new pumpkin!
