Crochet table runners add a touch of elegance to any table. This free pattern for a crochet table runner will make a wonderful addition to your dining room or kitchen table. The pattern creates a table runner that is approx. 12″ wide and 72″ long, which is the average size of a table runner. You can easily adjust both the width and height (instructions are included in the pattern).

You can use any size 4 (medium) yarn and pick colors to match your home decor. I used Lion Brand Heartland in the color “Dry Tortugas.” It was my first time using this yarn and I absolutely love it! It’s very soft and easy to work with.

If you are searching for an easy table runner crochet pattern without big bumps, you’ve come to the right place! This very simple pattern creates a table runner that actually lies flat, even without blocking.

This crochet table runner pattern is made with the beautiful Moss Stitch, which is a simple combination of single crochet and chain stitches and is very easy, even for a beginner.

The edges are naturally straight and tassels are added to the ends for a lovely finishing touch.

I really enjoyed making this table runner. At first, I was daunted by the size – 72″ was the longest thing I’ve ever crocheted. However, I found this pattern incredibly calming and didn’t want it to end! I was also surprised at how quickly it worked up.

Now I’m looking forward to hosting dinner parties and holiday dinners and dressing up the table with my new table runner!

The pattern creates a table runner that is approx. w: 12” x h: 72” (without the tassels).

Materials

Yarn: Any size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need approx. 900 yds in total. 

I used Lion Brand Heartland in the color “Dry Tortugas.” This yarn is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 251 yds / 230 m and 5 oz / 142 g. I used three and a half skeins. 

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm).

Other Materials: Scissors, yarn needle and a measuring tape. Optional: a piece of cardboard or any object that is 6” wide (to help cut tassels).

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch/chs = chain/chains
• st/sts = stitch/stitches
• sp/sps = space/spaces
• sk = skip 
• sc = single crochet
• ch-1 sp = chain 1 space
• ch-2 sp = chain 2 space

Gauge

4” x 4” = 10 sc and 16 rows following the pattern. To make a gauge swatch, chain 31 and follow the pattern. Only count sc sts (not chains or spaces).

Pattern Notes

• Chains never count as stitches. 
• How to adjust the size: The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make more or less starting chains in multiples of 2 + 1 (meaning to take any number that you can divide by 2 and add 1 to that number – i.e. 20 + 1 = 21 starting chains). To adjust the height, make more or less rows.

How to Crochet the Easy Table Runner (Pattern Instructions)

Table Runner Body

Start: Ch 55.

For Row 1 (only), work into the back ridge loops. 

Row 1: In the third chain from the hook, sc.

*Ch 1. Sk the next ch. In the next ch, sc.* 

Repeat from * to * across. 

(Your final st is a sc in the last ch). 

(At the end of Row 1, you should have: 27 sc sts, 1 ch-2 sp and 26 ch-1 sps. Reminder: chs never count as sts). 

The sp between the two skipped starting chs and the first sc creates a “ch-2 sp.”

Each ch-1, skipped st and sc creates a “ch-1 sp.”

You will work into these sps on the next row.

Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. 

In the first ch-1 sp, sc (new ch-2 sp created). 

*Ch 1. In the next ch-1 sp, sc (new ch-1 sp created).*

Repeat from * to * across until the last (ch-2) sp. 

Ch 1. In the last (ch-2) sp (the sp between the last sc and the two chs from the previous row), sc. 

(At the end of Row 2, you should have: 27 sc sts, 1 ch-2 sp and 26 ch-1 sps).

Row 3 and on: Repeat Row 2 until the height of your work measures approx. 72” or your desired height. 

Note: after Row 8, the width of your work should measure approx. 12” wide (and should continue to be this width for the rest of the pattern). If your width is different, you may want to start again with a different hook size or make fewer or more starting chains. 

All rows have the same number of stitches. You can end after any number of rows. After reaching your desired height, fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Adding Tassels / Fringe

Preparing Your Yarn

Each tassel has 2 strands of yarn that are approx. 12” long. (Once attached to the table runner, the tassel strands are folded so it looks like 4 strands that are 6” long). 

You will need 106 x 12” strands in total. 

Tip for cutting the strands: find an object that is 6” wide (a piece of cardboard, a notebook, etc). Wrap your yarn around the 6” object several times. Cut the yarn in the middle to form individual strands. These 12” strands will be used for the tassels. Repeat until you’ve made a total of 106 strands.

For different sized tassels, cut smaller or larger strands.

Where to Attach the Tassels

It doesn’t matter whether the front or back of the table runner is facing you – just ensure it’s the same for the top and bottom.

Top: Attach the tassels to all ch-1 and ch-2 spaces along the top. (27 tassels along the top). 

Bottom: Sk the ch-2 sp. To ensure there isn’t a large gap, attach tassels to the top loop of each chain st directly below the ch-1 spaces along the bottom. (26 tassels along the bottom). 

How to Attach the Tassels

A) Take two strands of yarn and fold them in half. With your hook, pull the folded ends through the chain or stitch from the back to the front (which creates a loop).

B) Pull the ends through the loop. 

C) Pull tight to make a knot.

(Repeat for each tassel). 

Trim the Tassels

Trim the strands to make them all one length. I cut mine to be 4”.
