Crochet Christmas Basket

Bring comfort, joy and homemade creativity to your home with this wonderful Crochet Christmas Basket. It’s a perfect basket for ornaments, candies or anything!

Crochet Christmas Basket Pattern

You could also make this basket, fill it with goodies and give it as a thoughtful homemade Christmas gift.

It’s sure to become a staple pattern in your Christmas crocheting!

This Crochet Christmas Basket Pattern is quick and very easy to make. It creates a basket that is approx. 5″ wide and the pattern includes instructions for making it bigger.

Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern

The basket bottom and sides are made with two strands of yarn held together, which creates a thick, sturdy basket. If you have never worked with two strands of yarn held together before, don’t be intimidated. You simply hold both strands at the same time, treat them as one and crochet normally. It’s okay for them to twist – that’s what creates a dense fabric, perfect for a basket.

Materials

Yarn: The basket (except the top and belt buckle) is made with two strands of yarn held together. You can either separate your yarn manually or use two skeins.

You can use any size 4 (medium) yarn. You will need approx. 2 x 50 yds (100 yds in total) of red yarn and 2 x 12 yds (24 yds in total) of black yarn. I used Impeccable Solid by Loops & Threads, which is size 4 (medium) and 100% acrylic. A skein is 285 yds / 260 m and 4.5 oz / 127.5 g.

For the top, you can use any size 5 (bulky) white yarn. You will need approx. 8 yds (you only need one strand). I used Bernat Pipsqueak in “Whitey White.” A skein is 101 yds / 92 m and 3.50 oz. / 100 g.

For the belt buckle, you can use any size 4 (medium) golden yellow yarn (you only need one strand). You will need approx. 3 yards. I used Impeccable in the color “Sunny Day.”

Crochet Hook Sizes: K/10.5 (6.50 mm) for the basket and F/5 (3.75 mm) for the belt buckle.

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Pattern Notes

  • Use two strands of yarn held together for the entire pattern, treating them as one strand and crocheting normally.
  • Always work into the first stitch (the stitch attached to the chain) unless instructed otherwise.
  • Chains never count as stitches.
  • Change colors when instructed by placing the new color on your hook and pulling it through the loop of the current color on your hook.

How to Crochet the Christmas Basket (Pattern Instructions)

Basket Bottom

Bottom Start:  With a K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook and two strands of red yarn held together, make a Magic Circle. Continue using red yarn until instructed to change.

Bottom Round 1: Ch 1.

In the Magic Circle, make 10 hdc. Pull the ends of the Magic Circle tight to close.

(10 hdc sts. Reminder: chs never count as sts).

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

Bottom Round 2: Ch 1. Do not turn. (Reminder: always work in the first st unless instructed otherwise)

Make 2 hdc in each st around. (20 hdc sts).

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

Bottom Round 3: Ch 1. Do not turn.

*In the next st, 2 hdc. In the next st, hdc.*

Repeat from * to * around. (30 hdc sts).

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

Exact sizing it not important. For reference, after Bottom Round 3, my work measured 3.75” across.

Bottom Round 4: Ch 1. Do not turn.

*In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 2 sts.*

Repeat from * to * around. (40 hdc sts).

Sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

After Round 4, my work measured 5” across.

Do not fasten off. The round numbers will now reset to make it easier to count rounds from the bottom up.

Note: The right side (the top) of the bottom you just completed will continue to face up.

Making the Basket Bigger

If you want to make the basket bottom bigger, you can continue making rounds. Always ch 1 and do not turn. Repeat the instructions below from * to * around. Then sl st into the top of the first hdc to join.

  • *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 3 sts.* (50 sts)
  • *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 4 sts.* (60 sts)
  • *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 5 sts.* (70 sts)
  • *In the next st, 2 hdc. Hdc in the next 6 sts.* (80 sts)

When you have reached your desired size, proceed to the basket sides instructions. The basket sides will have the same number of stitches as your final round of the bottom.
