Crochet Bandana
Crochet Bandanas are wonderful projects to make for yourself or to give as a gift. There is lots of flexibility with sizing and usually one size fits all, making it perfect to give to any recipient.
I love wearing crochet bandanas around my neck. Many people also wear them around their head. This pattern is designed for both neckwear and headwear. The ends become quite narrow at the tips so you can tie the crochet bandana in a double knot, which will hold it in place. (Only one knot is pictured below but as you can see, there is enough room to tie a double knot).
I’m very excited to share this free Crochet Bandana Pattern as it is incredibly easy. If you know how to single crochet, chain and double crochet, you can easily make this crochet bandana.
The pattern includes step-by-step instructions with a photo tutorial and to ensure you have no trouble following along, I’ve created a full video tutorial.
I recommend using a size 2 yarn for this crochet bandana. Size 2 is “fine”, which creates a nice light fabric for the bandana.

The pattern creates a bandana that is approx. 30” wide and 14” high.
Gauge
4” x 4” = 15 sts and 9 rows (following the pattern. Only count stitches not chains)
Materials
Yarn: Approx. 240 yds of any size 2 (fine) yarn. I used 1 skein of Cotton Fair in the color Succulent. This yarn is 52% cotton and 48% acrylic (3.5 oz / 100 g and 317 yds / 290 m).
Crochet Hook: H/8 (5.00 mm)
Other Materials: yarn needle, scissors and measuring tape.
Terminology
This crochet bandana pattern is is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ch-2 sp = chain-2 space
Pattern Notes
- Always work into the 1st st, the st attached to the chain.
- Chains never count as sts.

How to Crochet the Bandana (Pattern Instructions)
Bandana Instructions
Start: Chain 4.
Row 1: In the 4th ch from hook, 3 dc. (3 sts – reminder: chains never count as stitches).
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Make 2 dc in each st across. (6 sts).
Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. In the 1st st, sc. Ch 2. In the next st, 2 dc. *In the next st, sc. Ch 2. In the next st, 2 dc.* Repeat from * to * across. (9 sts).
Note: every time you ch 2, it creates a ch-2 space that you will work into on the following row.
Row 4: Ch 1 and turn. In the 1st st (the top of the last dc from the previous row), sc. Ch 2. In the next st (the top of the 2nd last dc from the previous row), 2 dc. For the remainder of the row, only work into the ch-2 spaces (not stitches). Working into the 1st ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2 and 2 dc) in the same space. *Working into the next ch-2 sp, (sc, ch 2 and 2 dc) in the same ch-2 space.* Repeat from * to * across row. (12 sts).
Row 5 and on: Repeat Row 4 until the height of your work measures 14” (approx. 30 rows) or your desired height. (Stitch count for each row is on the next page). You can end after any row. After reaching your desired height, fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
Stitch Count & Measurements
Measurements are taken after finishing the row and are approximate. Measure the width from end to end. Measure the height from the bottom tip to the top.
Note: measurements are just for reference. Your sizing doesn’t need to be the same.
Row 5: 15 sts. (4” wide x 2.5” high)
Row 6: 18 sts.
Row 7: 21 sts.
Row 8: 24 sts.
Row 9: 27 sts.
Row 10: 30 sts. (8.5” wide x 4.5” high)
Row 11: 33 sts.
Row 12: 36 sts.
Row 13: 39 sts.
Row 14: 42 sts.
Row 15: 45 sts. (14.5” wide x 7.5” high)
Row 16: 48 sts.
Row 17: 51 sts.
Row 18: 54 sts.
Row 19: 57 sts.
Row 20: 60 sts. (19” wide and 8.5” high)
Row 21: 63 sts.
Row 22: 66 sts.
Row 23: 69 sts.
Row 24: 72 sts.
Row 25: 75 sts. (23” wide and 12” high)
Row 26: 78 sts.
Row 26: 78 sts.
Row 27: 81 sts.
Row 28: 84 sts.
Row 29: 87 sts.
Row 30: 90 sts. (30” wide and 14” high)
