Pattern Details (Size, Yarn, Hook & Notes)

Size

The pattern creates a blanket that is approx. 33” wide and 33” high with the border (30” x 30” without the border).

Materials

Yarn: Any size 3 (light) yarn. You will need approx. 1,260 yds in total.

I used Baby Cuddles yarn by Loops & Threads in the color “Mint.” This yarn is size 3 (light) and 70% acrylic / 30% polyamide. A skein is 315 yds / 288 m and 4 oz / 113 g. I used four skeins in total (three skeins for the blanket body and one skein for the border).

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm).

Other Materials: Yarn needle, scissors and a measuring tape.

Terminology

This pattern is written for right-handed crochet using standard US terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terms, here’s my US to UK Conversion Chart. 

Abbreviations

• ch = chain
• st = stitch
• sts = stitches 
• sl st = slip stitch 
• sc = single crochet
• dc = double crochet 
• ch-1 sp = chain one space
• FPdc = front post double crochet
• BPdc = back post double crochet
• V-st = V-stitch

Gauge

4” x 4” = 13 sts (only counting sc and dc sts, not chains) and 13 rows following the blanket body pattern. To make a swatch, chain 20 and follow the pattern. 

Pattern Notes

• Chains never count as stitches. 
• This pattern is made from the bottom up. The number of starting chains determines the width and the number of rows determines the height. To adjust the width, make less or more starting chains in multiples of 2 + 2 (an even number). To adjust the height, make less or more rows.

Special Stitches

V-Stitch (V-st)

In this pattern, a V-st is (sc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch/space. 

Every time you make a V-st, you create a ch-1 sp that you will work into on the following row.

When working into a ch-1 sp, work into the space under the ch-1 and between the dc and sc from the previous row.  

Front and Back Post Stitches

For Rounds 3 – 5 of the border, you will be making front and back post stitches. If these stitches are new to you, here’s how to make them:

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc):

Yarn over, insert your hook from the front to the back at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull the yarn through the last two loops on your hook.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): 

Yarn over, insert your hook from the back to the front at the right of the designated stitch and bring your hook out at the left of the same stitch. Then finish your double crochet stitch as you normally would: yarn over and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the first two loops on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull the yarn through the last two loops on your hook.

How to Crochet the Charming No Holes Baby Blanket (Pattern Instructions)

Blanket Body

Start: Chain 100. 

For Row 1 (only) work into the back ridge loops. 

Row 1: In the second ch from hook, sc. Sc in each st across. (99 sts). 

Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. In the first st (the st attached to the ch), make a V-st (reminder: a V-st is (sc, ch 1, dc) in the same st). *Sk the next st. In the next st, make a V-st.* Repeat from * to * across. Your final st is a V-st in the last st. (50 V-sts made). 

Note: your work may curl at the start but will straighten out after making several more rows.

Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. You will now only work into the ch-1 spaces from the previous row – not into the tops of stitches. In the first ch-1 sp, make a V-st. Make a V-st in each ch-1 sp across. Your final st is a V-st in the last ch-1 sp. (50 V-sts made) 

Row 4 and on: Repeat Row 3 until the height of the blanket body is approx. 30” high (approx. 96 rows) or your desired height. You can end after any row. 

After reaching your desired height, do not fasten off. 

Blanket Border

Border Round 1: Ch 1. Do not turn.

Side (Down): Working down the side, sc evenly down until the last st, working into the sc and dc sts at the end of each row – not into the spaces. 

Need help with where to work into? When you see a sc st (near a ch-1), work 1 sc into that sc st. When you see a dc st, work 1 sc into the top and 1 sc into the bottom of that dc st. The exact stitch count doesn’t matter. The goal is to make sc sts that are evenly spaced out down (and up) the sides. You can work under 1 or 2 loops of the sts – just ensure your working into the stitches (not into the space around the stitch).

First Corner: In the last st down the side, make 3 sc in the same st.

Bottom: Sc in each ch across the bottom. 

Second Corner: In the first st up the side, make 3 sc in the same st. 

Side (Up): Working up the side, sc evenly up – the same as Side (Down). 

Third Corner: In the first st on the top, make 3 sc in the same st. 

Top: Working into the tops of sc and dc sts only (skipping over the chains), sc across. 

(You do not make a fourth corner). 

Sl st in the top of the first sc made in the round to join. 

Border Round 2: Ch 2. Do not turn. In the first st (the st attached to the ch), make 9 dc in the same st (this is the first of four corners). Dc in each st around except at the corners. At each corner (the middle st of the 3 sc sts made in each corner in the previous round), make 9 dc in the same st.  

After working all the way around, before joining the round, count your sts (the ch-2 that started the round does not count as a stitch). You need to have an odd number of sts in total at the end of Round 2. 

If you have an odd number of sts, proceed to join. 

If you have an even number of sts, make another dc in the last st, then proceed to join. 

Join: sl st into the top of the first dc made in the round. 

Border Round 3: Ch 2. Do not turn. FPdc around the first st from the round below (not the ch-2 from below. The ch-2 from below is never worked around). *BPdc around the next st from the round below. FPdc around the next st from the round below.* Repeat from * to * around. Nothing special happens at the corners. Your last st is a FPdc around the last dc from the round below. Sl st into the top of the first FPdc to join. 

Border Round 4: Ch 2. Do not turn. FPdc around the first st below (the FPdc from the previous round). The ch-2 from below is not worked around. *BPdc around the next st below (the next BPdc from the previous round). FPdc around the next st below (the next FPdc from the previous round).* Repeat from * to * around. Nothing special happens at the corners. Your last st is a FPdc around the last FPdc from the round below. Sl st into the top of the first FPdc to join.

Border Round 5: Repeat Round 4. 

After finishing Border Round 5, fasten off and weave in loose ends. 

Finishing (Optional)

You may notice small gaps on the sides between the blanket body and the border. You can easily fix this with your yarn needle and a long strand of yarn. Use your needle to weave the strand between the blanket body and the border to tighten up any gaps. Weave in loose ends.
